THE DECISIVE ELEMENT CHALLENGE

Q4 Challenge Begins April 22!

The school year isn't done yet!

Finish strong with TDEC

#TeachReflectRepeat #TDEC2019

Don't let the busy-ness of school distract you

Sure, you teach your kids everyday. But you also:

  • enter grades

  • call parents,

  • attend staff meetings,

  • consult IEPs,

  • make copies,

  • fix the copy machine,

  • deal with discipline issues,

  • hang student work on your bulletin boards,

  • make more copies,

  • fix the copy machine again,

  • spend time building relationships with students,

  • track down your principal,

  • find 12 kids after school to remind them about the forms they need to bring back signed tomorrow...

  • and finally go to the bathroom after the last student leaves your tutoring hours.

Whew! No wonder teachers are exhausted! The life of a teacher is set up for you to do. It is not designed for you to think about what you do. And it's easy for us to get distracted by all this doing!

The Decisive Element Challenge asks you to actively change that.

I’ve come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.
- Haim Ginott

For 6 weeks, focus on what matters most!

Take the Challenge.

In less than five minutes a day, you will transform your thinking about your day and for the next. You’ll join a team of fellow educators in your school and around the country who are challenging themselves to bring the same level of mindfulness to their daily teaching practice. Over the course of six weeks, you will:

Increase Mindfulness

By fixing your gaze on a limited number of elements of teaching, you'll drown out the noise of daily teacher life and turn your attention to the things that matter most for your students’ learning.

Spark
Collaboration

You're not in this alone. Every day you'll see your colleagues' reflections as well as how your whole team is doing in the Challenge. You'll now having something meaningful to talk about in the teachers' lounge.

Improve Your Practice

Reflecting daily will give you important insight into your teaching practice that you wouldn't otherwise notice. Awareness is the first step towards improvement.

Become the Decisive Element.

Being a teacher is hard.
So we made The Decisive Element Challenge quick and easy to fit in your day.

5 minutes a day. 6 weeks.

"Being on a team was very productive because not only did I self-reflect, but I was able to bounce ideas off of my colleagues. The Challenge helped to focus our discussions."
